Chart of nuclides — AME2020 / NUBASE2020
Scroll or use +/− to zoom, drag to move, click a box to zoom in and see everything about that nucleus. Search e.g. 100Sn or Cs-133. Lines mark the magic numbers and N = Z.
💡 What do these controls mean?
Choose a colour quantity, then search e.g. 116Sn and press Enter or click a nucleus. Show filters which boxes are visible; it does not change the data.
Masses chooses AME evaluated masses (including # extrapolations) or a theoretical ground-state model. Sₙ/S₂ₙ/Sₚ/S₂ₚ = 0 mark model separation-energy boundaries. N = Z and magic lines are reference lines; r/rp paths are illustrative. Line width changes only drawing.
📈 Chain plot with error bars
💡 What do these controls mean?
Quantity sets the vertical observable. Chain keeps Z (same element), N (same neutron count), or A = Z + N (same mass number) fixed. Click a nucleus to choose its chain.
Enable Multiple chains to enter a chain-number interval and a horizontal interval. X axis: measured extent, full model extent, or manual limits. Y axis: all series, data only, or manual limits. Error bars show uncertainties; including them in autoscale expands the limits. Triangles mark clipped values.
Measured masses — live comparison
Compare your entered atomic masses with AME2020 and theory. First try this two-minute synthetic example.
- Search 116Sn on the chart, or click that nucleus. Start with Quantity = S₂ₙ and Chain = Isotopic chain.
- Click “+10 keV synthetic example” below. It adds an enabled 116Sn row and turns on the two loaded series. Your existing rows are retained.
- For your own table, copy an example below into the paste box, edit it, then click Import (replace table). Check Use next to every row you want calculated.
- Keep AME2020 and New + AME2020 checked. Start with Experimental mass filter = All centres and leave the σ limit empty. Then try Outputs affected by loaded inputs to isolate the change.
Expected: 116Sn ME = −91515.979 ± 1 keV, exactly +10 keV from AME. For S₂ₙ, the recalculated point at N=66 falls 10 keV and N=68 rises 10 keV. These are artificial practice values.
Copy-ready examples and sample files
Every format below represents the same synthetic 116Sn mass and 1 keV uncertainty. Select a format, copy the text, or send it to the paste box. Importing replaces the working table; it does not overwrite a saved table.
Column meanings, units and state names
Edit a mass or its uncertainty: the chain plots update immediately. Import CSV/TSV/JSON/TXT with headers nuclide, value, uncertainty, unit, quantity, reference. Use 116Sn for ground state, 116mSn or 116Sn[m] for an isomer. keV/MeV/u/µu are supported; atomic means the full atomic mass. All inputs stay in this browser; the reference chart stays AME/model. Missing neighbours leave gaps; AME is used where a loaded ground-state mass is absent. ME = mass excess; mass/atomic = full atomic mass; BE = total binding energy in keV or MeV (not per nucleon). BE conversion uses fixed AME2020 neutron/hydrogen reference values; their uncertainty is omitted.
Value and σ use the same Unit. ME is mass excess; BE is total binding energy, never BE/A; mass is the full neutral-atom mass. σ is a positive 1σ uncertainty, not a percentage. Reference/DOI identifies the source. A >5σ flag only highlights a difference from AME; check quantity and units. “Unresolved mixture” switches Use off by default. Keep Last enabled row wins unless you deliberately need the approximate weighted mean.
Inputs stay in this page. “Save in this browser” uses this origin/device’s browser storage and creates no project file. “Save input table CSV” creates a download; choose your folder in the browser. Portable JSON can also be copied to a file. Sample files are synthetic.
Independent loaded rows assumed. Weighted means are approximate; shared systematics are not supplied. This is not an AME adjustment.
No input is active: check Use beside a valid row. An unchecked row or excluded mixture changes no plot.

More mass filters — formulas and neighbours
Choose a filter in Quantity or in the reference-chart colour menu. The same formula is applied to AME2020, your input masses and each selected model. The affected-values window lists every surviving dependence on your input.
The four fixed proton–neutron operators use the displayed stencil at every centre. Their ee/oo/even–odd physical interpretation requires the appropriate parity. The existing δVpn choice automatically selects a stencil from Z,N parity.
Slopes are forward differences: S₂ₙ(N+1) − S₂ₙ(N), and the proton analogue. Gsym includes ½, matching the supplied R executable weights; its R description omitted that factor. These are finite differences, not derivatives divided by a step.
Missing required masses leave gaps. Shared mass terms cancel before uncertainty and # provenance are calculated; other experimental inputs are treated as independent. Model uncertainty remains unknown. # inputs use hollow experimental points and no shaded band.

How to use · Red circle at selected nuclide
Draw a red ring around the nuclide selected in the reference card, wherever it appears in the chain. It is a selection marker, not an uncertainty or calibrant measurement.
How to use · ● ○# ◆ ◇# ■ □#
New and New + AME2020 share each input label’s colour but use different shapes. Filled means all surviving mass inputs are measured; hollow means at least one new or AME mass is extrapolated (#). Residuals apply the same rule after shared terms cancel. Choose shapes and colours below. Lines and error bars apply to both panels. New series require at least one active ground-state input. Without one, only AME and selected models are drawn.
How to use · Experimental mass filter for plots
“Exclude #” requires a measured AME centre and a complete, non-extrapolated AME calculation, including neighbours; the plotted value must also contain no # mass inputs. This applies to New, combined and model comparisons, and their residuals. Active centres selects only entered ground states; Affected also includes neighbouring outputs that use them. The σ limit checks the centre mass: AME for AME/models, active input for New/combined. Empty means any; unknown σ fails a specified limit. Chart filters are separate.
AME / New / combined: filled = no # mass inputs; hollow = at least one # input. Models are predictions, without #.
How to use · + / − / ↔
Wheel or +/−: zoom. Drag: pan. Touch: pinch to zoom. Focus the plot: arrows pan, +/− zoom, Home rescales the whole selected chain range. PNG/PDF save the current view; CSV includes all plotted-series data.
How to use · ● ○ ◆ □
AME2020 measured and # points share blue; # points are open. Each input label has one colour for New and New + AME2020, with different markers. New + AME2020 shows mixed formulas only. Models are dashed; their spread is not uncertainty.
# # = from systematics (extrapolated), as in AME2020/NUBASE2020; AME2020 tabulated energies use evaluated uncertainties; untabulated, New and model quantities use independent-mass propagation (AME correlations omitted).
How to use · Δ
Δ = plotted series − AME2020, shared x axis. Shared AME inputs cancel; independent primitive errors combine in quadrature, other correlations omitted. Model residual error bars show AME uncertainty only; model uncertainty is unavailable.

💡 Chart hints — symbols, filters and calculations
- Z, N and A
- Z counts protons and identifies the element; N counts neutrons; A = Z + N is the mass number. Move right to add neutrons and up to add protons. A is a count, not a measured atomic mass in u.
- Mass excess ME
- ME = (m_atom − A u)c², using a neutral atom in its ground state. It is the difference from the integer-mass reference, expressed as energy; a negative value is not a negative mass. The neutral ¹²C atom defines 12 u, so its mass excess is zero. keV and MeV differ by a factor of 1,000.
- Binding energy B and B/A
- The atomic-mass convention used here is B = Z ME(¹H) + N ME(n) − ME(Z,N). B/A is the average per nucleon. This combination includes the small electronic-binding differences of neutral atoms; interpreting it as a precision nuclear binding energy needs those corrections.
- Mass filters
- Measured/extrapolated selects the mass-quality flag; # marks a value estimated from systematics. δm < 1, 10 or 100 keV means the quoted mass standard uncertainty is below that threshold and the mass is not extrapolated. Unknown uncertainty and missing mass are separate filters. An uncertainty of zero must never be inferred from an empty field.
- Other filters
- Stable, known half-life, confirmed isomers, magic Z/N, odd/even A, proton-rich N < Z and N≈Z select different properties. Even/odd refers to the integer proton and neutron counts. Available Δ⁽³⁾/Δ⁽⁵⁾ requires all neighbours in the respective calculation. Low Q requires a positive β⁻ or electron-capture energy below 1 MeV. An extrapolated excitation-energy flag is independent of the ground-state mass flag.
- States, half-life and spin
- An isomer is a metastable nuclear state, not a different element. The searchable state list preserves source designations, higher states and excitation energies Eₓ above the ground state. Other levels and analogue states require the advanced state filter. T½ is the half-life; Jπ is spin and parity. Models here predict ground-state masses, not isomer excitation energies.
- Separation energies and drip lines
- Sₙ is the energy to remove one neutron; S₂ₙ removes two. Proton quantities Sₚ and S₂ₚ are analogous. Negative separation energy means that emission is energetically possible; it does not specify its lifetime. A line marks the last bound entry under the displayed table convention, not a directly measured continuous boundary. A model table edge may limit the line.
- Decay Q-values
- Q is the available decay energy. With neutral atomic masses, Q(β⁻) = ME(parent) − ME(daughter), Q(EC) has the same mass-difference form, and Q(α) subtracts the daughter and ⁴He mass excess. Positron emission additionally needs 2mₑc² = approximately 1.022 MeV; positive Q(EC) alone does not guarantee β⁺ emission.
- Shell gaps δ₂ₙ and δ₂ₚ
- δ₂ₙ(Z,N) = S₂ₙ(Z,N) − S₂ₙ(Z,N+2); use Z in place of N for the proton form. A sharp change can indicate a shell closure. Magic-number guide lines mark 2, 8, 20, 28, 50, 82 and 126; these guides are not a claim that every shell remains equally strong far from stability.
- Pairing indicators Δ⁽³⁾ and Δ⁽⁵⁾
- These are odd–even mass-staggering indicators, not directly measured microscopic gaps. At fixed Z, Δₙ⁽³⁾ = (−1)ᴺ[ME(N+1) − 2ME(N) + ME(N−1)]/2. The mass-excess five-point convention is Δₙ⁽⁵⁾ = −(−1)ᴺ[ME(N+2) − 4ME(N+1) + 6ME(N) − 4ME(N−1) + ME(N−2)]/8. Proton forms use Z. Missing neighbours produce missing results.
- Proton–neutron indicator δVpn
- For even Z and even N, δVpn = [B(Z,N) − B(Z,N−2) − B(Z−2,N) + B(Z−2,N−2)]/4. It estimates an average interaction through binding-energy differences. Odd/even combinations use different finite-difference stencils; a curve is not a direct isolated two-particle potential.
- Wigner indicator W
- This chart defines W(Z,N) = δVpn(Z,N) − [δVpn(Z,N+2) + δVpn(Z,N−2)]/2, at fixed Z. It compares the local value to neighbours two neutrons away and can highlight structure near N = Z. It has energy units; it is neither the number of protons nor a universal standalone measurement of Wigner energy. Its value depends on this stencil and available masses.
- Mass models, residual and β₂
- FRDM1992 was published in 1995; FRDM2012 in 2016. HFB-17 and HFB-D1M are distinct models. ME(AME) − ME(model) is positive when the evaluated mass excess is larger. β₂ is a dimensionless quadrupole deformation parameter: its sign distinguishes prolate/oblate within the model convention. Model error bars are unavailable here, not zero; a global RMS error is not a per-nucleus uncertainty.
- Chain plots and uncertainties
- An isotopic chain fixes Z; an isotonic chain fixes N; an isobaric chain fixes A. Range controls select chains and horizontal coordinates. Error bars show quoted standard uncertainties; shared occurrences of the same mass cancel before propagation. Remaining distinct masses use a diagonal covariance approximation because the full AME covariance is unavailable. A connecting line guides the eye; gaps are missing data, not zero.
- Process paths, colours and saved figures
- r denotes rapid neutron capture; rp denotes rapid proton capture. The orange and green paths are illustrative paths, not a reaction-network calculation for every temperature or density. EC means electron capture; β⁺ means positron decay. Adjust overlay width before PNG/PDF saving; PDF contains the same high-resolution image. CSV keeps numeric precision. Website branding is omitted from figures.
