14. A modern eleven-level answer to “What is light?”

Choose a description for the question #

Ray optics predicts an image; wave optics predicts interference; quantum theory predicts discrete exchanges and correlations; relativity describes causal propagation. These descriptions overlap in their valid limits. Ask what is measured, what scale matters and which assumptions are being used before choosing the description.

The original “eleven levels” idea is worth keeping, but the levels should be scientifically reorganized.

Level 1 — Light as illumination and perception #

Human vision detects photons only in a limited spectral band, roughly 400400–700 nm700\,\mathrm{nm}, with physiological sensitivity depending on receptor response. “Color” is a perceptual construction associated with how the visual system processes spectral information; it is not an intrinsic classical paint-like property of a photon.

Level 2 — Light as rays #

Geometric optics predicts imaging, reflection, and refraction when wavelength effects are negligible.

Level 3 — Light as a wave #

Interference, diffraction, and polarization require amplitudes and phase.

Level 4 — Light as an electromagnetic wave #

Maxwell unifies electricity, magnetism, and optics through a propagating electromagnetic field. A Dynamical Theory of the Electromagnetic Field (1865)

Level 5 — Light without mechanical ether #

The development from ether models through Michelson-Morley and Lorentz invariance culminated in special relativity. On the Relative Motion of the Earth and the Luminiferous Ether (1887) · Zur Elektrodynamik bewegter K"orper (1905)

Level 6 — Light as quantized energy exchange #

A field mode exchanges energy in units ℏω\hbar\omega, and Einstein’s light quantum explains the frequency threshold of the photoelectric effect. "Uber einen die Erzeugung und Verwandlung des Lichtes betreffenden heuristischen Gesichtspunkt (1905)

Level 7 — Light carries momentum #

Photons obey E=pcE=pc and transfer momentum in radiation pressure and Compton scattering. A Quantum Theory of the Scattering of X-rays by Light Elements (1923)

Level 8 — The photon is the gauge quantum of electromagnetism #

In the Standard Model the photon is the massless spin-1 gauge boson of unbroken U(1)EMU(1)_{\mathrm{EM}}.

Level 9 — QED is the quantum field theory of charged matter and light #

The basic interaction is encoded in the covariant derivative and can be developed perturbatively in α≈1/137\alpha\approx1/137 at low energies.

Level 10 — Classical light is a limit of a quantum field #

Laser light is well approximated by coherent states with large mean photon occupation, while single-photon experiments reveal discrete detection and quantum correlations.

Level 11 — Light defines null causal structure #

Light travels on null trajectories in local vacuum spacetime geometry; ds2=0ds^2=0. There is no photon rest frame, so “light sees the universe instantaneously” is metaphor rather than a valid observer statement. Zur Elektrodynamik bewegter K"orper (1905)
